Grill Size Chart by Model
Area in square inches. Dimensions are width × depth × height in inches, lid closed where the maker specifies it. Burgers at once assumes about 20 sq in per quarter-pound patty on the primary grate.

Primary vs Total Cooking Area
Gas and pellet grills often advertise total area, which includes warming racks above the main grate. Those racks are useful for buns and keeping food warm, but most of your cooking happens on the primary grate, so compare grills by primary area. Bullet smokers like the Smokey Mountain list the combined area of two stacked grates, which works for ribs and pork butts but not for burgers.
Planning Space on the Patio
Measure with the side shelves included: a 3-burner gas grill with shelves up is about 4–5 feet wide, while a 22-inch kettle needs a space about 2 feet square. Check your grill's manual for the minimum distance from walls and railings before you pick a spot.

Allow about 20 square inches of grate per burger patty and about 28 per bone-in chicken piece. For 10 people grilling burgers in two batches, a 22-inch kettle (363 sq in) is enough; for 20 people, look at 450–550 sq in or cook in more batches.
