These are working estimates for briquettes in a covered kettle or bullet smoker on a mild, calm day. Wind, cold and opening the lid often all raise fuel use, so keep a spare bag on hand. The same rules drive the charcoal lines in every party size guide on this site.

How Much to Buy for a Party

Grilled food (burgers, chicken, sausages, hot dogs) works out to about 0.5 lb of charcoal per guest: 10 lbs for 20 people, 25 lbs for 50. Smoked meats depend on hours and cookers, not guests, so a 30-person rib cook on two smokers needs about 28 lbs. Charcoal is commonly sold in 8, 16 and 20 lb bags; round up to whole bags.

Lighting tip: a chimney starter lights a full load in about 15 minutes without lighter fluid, which also keeps the chemical taste off the food.

FAQ

How much charcoal do I need to grill?

One full chimney (about 5–6 lbs of briquettes) runs a 22-inch kettle for about an hour of direct grilling. Add half a chimney for each extra hour. For a party, plan about 0.5 lb of charcoal per guest you are grilling for.

How much charcoal for a long smoke?

Plan about 1.5 lbs of briquettes per hour on a kettle or bullet smoker, plus about 5 lbs to start. A 6-hour rib cook uses roughly 14 lbs; a 12-hour pork butt about 23 lbs.

Does lump charcoal last as long as briquettes?

No. Lump burns hotter and faster, so plan about 25% more by weight than briquettes for the same cook time.

How much charcoal for 50 people?

Grilling burgers, chicken or sausages for 50 takes about 25 lbs, two 16 lb bags. Smoking ribs or pork for 50 depends on the number of cookers: about 14 lbs per kettle or smoker for a 6-hour cook.
