Keeping Food Safe in July Heat
- The 1-hour rule: above 90°F, perishable food should not sit out more than 1 hour (USDA). Serve in small batches and keep the rest in the cooler or on a warm grill.
- Two coolers: one for drinks that gets opened constantly, one for raw meat and salads that stays shut, both in the shade.
- Hot food stays hot: hold cooked burgers and dogs in a foil pan on the cool side of the grill, above 140°F.
- Mayo-based sides: nest the bowl in a larger bowl of ice.

Parade, Pool and Cookout: A Day Plan
If guests come from a morning parade, have snacks and cold drinks ready at arrival, start smoking ribs in the morning, and save the grill for mid-afternoon. Buy buns, chips and paper goods a few days ahead, meat 1–2 days ahead and ice the morning of the 4th.

FAQ
How much food do I need for a 4th of July party?
For each adult plan about 1.2 burgers and 0.8 hot dogs (two items and two buns), 0.3 lb of each side, 1 ear of corn, about 1 lb of watermelon, 2 lbs of ice on a hot day and about 3.5 drinks for a 5-hour afternoon. For 25 guests that is about 33 burgers, 22 hot dogs, 7 packs of buns, 88 drinks and 5 bags of ice.
When should I serve food before the fireworks?
Most fireworks start around 9–9:30pm. Serve the main meal about 3 hours before, light the grill 45 minutes before that, and put perishable food away within 2 hours of serving, or 1 hour if it is above 90°F. A dessert and drinks table carries guests through to the show.
How much ice do I need for a July 4th party?
Plan about 2 lbs of ice per guest on a hot July day: half for chilling drinks, half for cups. For 30 guests that is six 10-lb bags. Keep drink and food coolers separate so the food cooler stays closed.
How much watermelon for a 4th of July party?
About 1 lb of whole watermelon per guest. A 15–20 lb melon serves 15–20 people as a side; cut it into stars or wedges just before serving and keep it cold.
